Caringi, Saunders, Ballo Earn Holiday Inn Express BWI All-Tournament Team Honors

BALTIMORE- UMBC, Navy, and VCU placed three players apiece on the All-Tournament Team of the 2012 Holiday Inn Express BWI Classic. No champion or Most Valuable Player was named because Navy and VCU were unable to complete their Saturday contest due to lightning.

Any of those three teams could have won the tournament title had the Mids and Rams been able to play to a conclusion. Robert Morris lost both contests and finished fourth.

UMBC (1-0-2) recorded a win and a draw in the classic and were paced offensively by junior forward Pete Caringi III (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall). He scored all three Retriever goals in the two games, opening the VCU game with a header in the 32nd minute, and posting a pair of first-half goals in under seven minutes in the 2-1 victory over Robert Morris.

Oumar Ballo

Caringi was joined on the All-Tournament team by sophomore defender Oumar Ballo (Baltimore ,Md./CCBC-Essex/Archbishop Curley) and junior goalkeeper Phil Saunders (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall). Ballo has solidified a UMBC defense that currently has no returning players competing from a year ago. Saunders posted a career-high eight saves in the 1-1 double-overtime draw vs. VCU and allowed his first score of the year to RMU after 307 minutes of scoreless work on the season.

For Navy (1-1-0), junior forward Alex Wilson and junior backs Martin Sanchez and Zach Davis earned All-Tournament team honors. Wilson was credited with the game-winning goal in the 2-0 victory over Robert Morris.

A pair of VCU (1-0-2) fullbacks, Brad Seymour and Dennis Castillo earned the honor, along with midfielder Joseph Hoboush. Castillo, a freshman, scored the VCU goal vs. UMBC on a game-tying penalty kick early in the second half.

A pair of Colonials, forward Luca Campos and midfielder Mike Jones, earned honors for Robert Morris (0-3-1).
