Cambridge, Mass- Junior forward Pete Caringi III (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall) was named America East Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week, it was announced on Sept. 4. He earns his first-ever Player of the Week honor after capturing two Rookie of the Week citations in 2010.
Caringi scored two goals less than seven minutes apart in the first half and the Retrievers held on for a 2-1 win over Robert Morris on Sept. 1. It was the second career two-goal effort for Caringi, who has all three UMBC scores through three games. He scored the game's first goal in a 1-1 double-overtime draw vs. VCU on Aug. 30.
The two-time America East All-Conference selection scored in the 17th minute off a header from eight yards out and came back in the 24th minute also from inside the box to spur UMBC to its first victory (1-0-2) of the season.
Caringi scored twice in his freshman debut vs. VMI on Sept. 2, 2010 and now has 13 career goals. He currently leads the conference in goals per game (1.0).
The Retrievers play their first road contest of the season in the next match, facing Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Md. on Fri., Sept. 7.
