2012: After a season-and-a half of dormancy, he played every minute of Retriever soccer (2120:00) during the championship season… Opened the season with by posting his eighth career shutout in a 0-0 double-overtime draw vs. Radford on Aug. 25… Tied his career high with eight saves in a 1-1 draw vs. VCU on Aug. 30… Preserved a 2-0 UMBC shutout over Loyola by stopping a penalty kick in 83’ on Sept. 19… Finished the season brilliantly, not allowing a goal in UMBC’s final 551 minutes of action… Did not allow a goal in the America East Tournament, nor two NCAA Tournament games… Stopped UNH’s second and fourth PK opportunities in the America East title game, as UMBC advanced with a 4-2 margin on Nov. 10… Brushed aside ODU’s first and third attempts in the first-round NCAA contest in Norfolk as UMBC advanced, 3-2, in penalty kicks… Denied UNH’s fourth attempt in PK’s in the second round game, but the Retrievers misfired on three-of-five tries and were ousted, 3-2… Posted 10 shutouts, falling one short of Brian Rowland’s single-season record (11, 2002)… Recorded the fourth-most saves in a season (77) for a UMBC Division I junior…His 17 career shutouts are fourth on UMBC’s all-time list and his 165 saves are ranked ninth… Led America East with a 0.72 goals against average and placed 13th in the nation… His save percentage of 81.9 finished at 28th in the country... Owns a career record of 28-13-7 (.656).    


2011: Did not compete in any fall contests.


2010: Started the first seven games of the campaign and posted a 3-3-0 record… Got the win with a perfect 45 minutes in the opener vs. VMI on Sept 2 and recorded a shutout two days later in a 2-0 victory over Wofford… Lost three of his next four decisions, posting a victory in a 2-1 overtime win vs. La Salle on Sept. 15… Made a season-high seven saves in his final action of the season, a 2-1 loss at FDU on Sept. 26.


2009: The freshman goalkeeper got the starting nod in the season opener and started all 20 games on the campaign… Posted his first career shutout (of six on the season) in game No. 3 vs. St. Joseph’s on Sept. 6… Recorded four consecutive shutouts in wins over Towson, Drexel, Loyola (Md.) and La Salle… Named America East Conference Rookie of the Week for games played Sept. 14-20 and Sept. 21-27… Was especially brilliant in the 1-0 wins over Towson and Loyola, with dazzling saves down the stretch of each contest… Posted a season-high six saves vs. the Greyhounds, which he later tied with six stops at Hartford on Oct. 28… His lone shutout in America East competition occurred vs. Stony Brook on Oct. 7...Recorded the second-most saves in a season (68) for a UMBC Division I freshman netminder.   


Background: Majoring in Health Administration and Policy… A Baltimore Sun Second-Team All-Metro selection as a fullback for Perry Hall… Also earned All-Division, All-County and Second-Team All-State honors… Competed as a goalkeeper for Baltimore Bays’ club team… Part of a powerful Gators’ squad which reached the state championship in both 2007 and 2008… Netted the first penalty kick in the state semifinals as Perry Hall defeated Magruder, 3-1, to move to the state finals vs. Bowie… Also lettered in baseball… Father, Ian, played professional soccer… Enjoys mahi mahi and the music of Jack Johnson… Son of Ginger and the late Ian Saunders… Phillip Andrew Saunders was born on Sept. 28, 1991.
