Orono, Maine - Senior Kevin Mezzadra's second goal of the game, 34 seconds into the second overtime period, lifting visiting UMBC (4-7-3, 1-2-2) to a 2-1 victory over Maine (0-14-0, 0-4) in America East Conference play.
Mezzadra, who did not play in Wednesday's 2-0 loss at Stony Brook due to the accumulation of five yellow cards, now has nine goals on the season.
He scored UMBC's first goal in the 25th minute of play, as he positioned himself at the post knocked in David Feazell's corner kick. The Retrievers dominated play in the first 45 minutes, outshooting the Black Bears, 10-1, but could not extend the 1-0 margin.
The Retrievers, who have been unable to post a shutout this season, came within 25 seconds of earning their first of the year. But Maine's Martin John converted a Cooper Friend corner kick sending the contest to extra time.
For UMBC, it was the third consecutive Saturday that they went to overtime, with both previous games ending up in 1-1 draws. After a scoreless first ten-minute period, UMBC sophomore Kevin Gnatiko captured the ball at midfield in the opening moments of the second extra session. He beat three Maine defenders and cut the ball back to an onrushing Mezzadra, who beat netminder Giacomo Brunino and gave UMBC a much-needed conference victory.
Three of UMBC's final four games will be at home as they try to get into the six-team America East Championships.
