Baltimore, Md.-Playing a man down for the final 68 minutes, the UMBC men's soccer team nearly held off visiting Boston University, but a late goal helped the Terriers to a 1-1 double-overtime tie in the America East Conference opener for both teams.
UMBC is now unbeaten in three straight and improved to 3-5-2, 0-0-1, while Boston University went to 5-1-4, 0-0-1.
Both teams played cautiously in the first half and there was little sustained pressure from either side. But the Retrievers capitalized on a late flurry when freshman forward Dan Maudslay won the ball at the top of the box and chipped it down the left wing. Another first-year player, forward Andrew Gillis gathered it and blasted a shot by Terrier netminder Zach Riffett from nine yards away in the 38th minute.
UMBC's joy was short-lived as four minutes later, starting junior defender Bryan Moffa picked up his second yellow card of the half and was ejected at the 41:53 mark. The Terriers threatened later, but two consecutive shots hit the post in the waning moments of the half.
Playing leading scorer Kevin Mezzadra on defense in the second half, UMBC survived until the 79th minute. The Terriers quickly countered and freshman midfielder Samuel Appiah worked a quick give-and-go with sophomore forward Jin Oh. Appiah got the return pass deep in the box and beat UMBC goalkeeper Steve King from eight yards away.
UMBC managed just one shot in the final 65 minutes, but it was the best opportunity in overtime, as Gillis' attempt from 13 yards out just curled wide of the far right post.
The Terriers dominated the shot chart, 19-4, and King came up with five saves to earn the draw. Riffett made one save for the visitors.
The Retrievers are now 10-1-3 at home in two-plus seasons of America East play and 2-1-1 in four meetings with Boston University. They will face Albany on the road on Wednesday.
