MEN'S SOCCER BLANKS RIDER, 4-0, FOR FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON

Baltimore, MD - UMBC (1-2-0) extended its home unbeaten streak to 21 straight (15-0-6) as the Retrievers blanked Rider (0-2-1), 4-0, in the nightcap of the Coca-Cola/adidas Kick Off Classic.

Davidson's (3-0-0) Matt Allen scored at the 99:59 mark of the first overtime as the Wildcats nipped Navy (2-1-0), 2-1, in the opening game.

The Retrievers continued to blister the opposing net as they outshot Rider, 18-7,and have outshot three opponents, 68-22. But unlike losses to Georgia Southern (3-0) and Niagara (3-2), UMBC did not allow Rider many quality chances and were able to put away several chances.

Junior forward David Feazell (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) got UMBC on the board at 30:36 as he back-heeled a short cross by Esteban Mariel (Dallas, Texas) from close range. Then, before the end of the half, sophomore midfielder Matt Watson was taken down by Rider netminder Daniel Riverso at the edge of the box. Senior defender Marcus Gross converted the penalty kick with just 10 second remaining in the stanza.

Freshman forward Kevin Gnatiko produced a brilliant goal at the 58:40 mark, as he beat Riverso to the ball at the 30-yard line, eluded several defenders and scored into an unguarded net. Senior midfielder Steve Goddard scored UMBC's fourth goal from 11 yards away at the 83:29 mark.

Netminder Andy Marchica made 2 saves in 87 minutes of action for the Retrievers.

UMBC's last regular season home loss occurred in September of 2002 to Navy.

The Midshipmen took a 1-0 lead over Davidson at the 81:37 mark as junior forward McKenzie Plank gathered in a pass from J.P. Murphy and scored from 13 yards away just inside the far left post. But the Wildcats, who outshot the Mids, 16-7, deadlocked the score at 85:53, as Allen’s attempt hit the crossbar, and sophomore forward Tom Lavin outdueled several Navy defenders to knock the rebound in from close range.

Davidson won in dramatic fashion as they were awarded a corner kick with 8 seconds left in the first overtime. Navy netminder Aric McElheny punched the attempt away, but right to Allen, who volleyed a shot home from seven yards away just ahead of the horn.

Navy takes on Rider on Sunday at noon, while UMBC plays Davidson in pre-determined contests.
