HOFSTRA RALLIES TO DEFEAT UMBC IN OVERTIME, 2-1, IN KAPPA OPENER

Baltimore, MD-Senior forward Shaun Higgins scored two goals, including the second early in overtime as visiting Hofstra (1-0) rallied for a 2-1 overtime victory over UMBC (0-1) in the nightcap of the Kappa Kick Off Classic.

In the opener, Mt. St. Mary's (1-0) scored a goal in each half and blanked Gardner-Webb (0-1) , 2-0.

In a pre-determined format, Hofstra will meet the Mount in the opener on Sunday, while UMBC takes on Gardner-Webb.

The Retrievers got on the board late in the first half, as junior Marco Angelini knocked in a shot from close range at the 39:59 mark. Linemate George Bakoulas had redirected Brandon Quaranta' s corner kick toward the goal mouth, where Angelini tapped it in.

UMBC controlled play for the much of the second half and had several chances to pad the lead, but were denied on a pair of outstanding saves by Pride netminder D.J Greening.

Higgins tied the game at the 76:19 mark, as he received a lead pass from Matthew Telling and beat UMBC netminder Brian Rowland from 10 yards out. Higgins struck again to end the game just 1:51 into the first overtime period, taking a cross from Michael Hermann and beating Rowland with a hard shot from a similar spot on the field.
