  • MEN'S SOCCER SEASON ENDS IN PENALTY KICKS AT NEC TOURNAMENT

    Baltimore, MD-The 2002 Northeast Conference finals will be a rematch of last year's title game, as both #1 seed LIU and #3 seed FDU advanced to Sunday's finale at UMBC Soccer Stadium. The top-seeded Blackbirds (11-5-3) cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win over #4 Robert Morris (9-9-2), while the defending champion Knights (8-4-8) advanced via penalty kicks, 3-2, after playing to a 0-0 tied with #2 UMBC (11-6-3).

    Somerset, NJ -- Robert Morris senior midfielder Rhian Dodds (Hamilton, Ont./Sir Allen McNabb) was selected the Northeast Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Year in a vote by league head coaches. One of the league's top playmakers, Dodds has been a key figure in the resurgence of the Colonials' program in recent years. Central Connecticut State freshman forward Jorden Holder (Oxon, England) claimed Rookie of the Year accolades, while UMBC's Pete Caringi was named NEC Coach of the Year. Caringi, a two-time NEC Coach of the Year recipient, led UMBC to an 8-1-1 mark in conference play this year, as well as a share of the NEC regular season title.

    For the second time in the tournament, Hofstra (2-0) rallied from a second-half deficit and defeated Mt. St. Mary's (1-1), 3-2, to win the Kappa Kick Off Classic, held at rain-slicked UMBC Stadium.In the nightcap, UMBC Head Coach Pete Caringi earned his 300th collegiate coaching victory (300-102-21, 21st year overall) as the Retrievers (1-1) blanked Gardner-Webb (0-2), 3-0. Caringi is now 130-75-13 in his 12th year at UMBC, after compiling a mark of 170-27-8 at Essex (MD) Community College.
