Baltimore, MD-Freshman forward Derek McElligott scored three second half goals as UMBC (1-0) rallied for a 3-1 victory over Iona (0-1) in the nightcap of the Kappa Kick Off Classic at UMBC Soccer Stadium.

In the opener, Delaware forward Mike Honeysett's eleventh shot of the game found the net with just 6:19 remaining in the second overtime as the Blue Hens (1-0) also came from behind to nip Mt. St. Mary's (0-1), 2-1.

Iona stunned the Retrievers early, as Paul Nobile converted a penalty kick 6:08 into the contest as teammate Argim Dema was taken down in the box. UMBC controlled play in the first 45 minutes, but did not break through until McElligott (Greater Grace Christian Acad./Baltimore, MD) eluded Gael netminder Patrick McAllen and scored a sharp angle goal from the right side at 61:46.

McElligott got the game-winner at 74:44, when freshman Danny Mongello (Columbia, MD) took a pass from senior defender Andy Wells, beat his defender and slipped his cross past McAllen. McElligott touched the ball in from just outside the goal line. The highly-touted freshman completed the hat trick, heading in a perfect cross from James Hamilton at 85:04.

UMBC outshot Iona, 15-7, including 8-2 in the second half. Junior netminder Brian Rowland made six saves, while McAllen garnered eight for the visitors.

Despite the predetermined match-ups, Delaware will meet UMBC for the title at 2:30 on Sunday, while Iona battles the Mount at noon.
