    The Retrievers threw everything they could at nemesis FDU, but came up short. The third-seeded Retrievers (9-6-2) lost to the second-seeded Knights, 1-0, in the Northeast Conference semi-final game. FDU will face #4 LIU for the league title on Sunday.
  • SOCCER'S McELLIGOTT NAMED NEC ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

    Somerset, NJ--UMBC freshmen Derek McElligott and Missy Moore both earned Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year awards in a vote of the league's coaches. Five men's players and three on the women's side earned All NEC honors. For the men, senior midfielder P.J. Wakefield and senior defender Andy Wells earned First Team honors, along with the aforementioned McElligott. Senior midfielders Ricky Brown and James Hamilton earned Second Team honors.

  • MEN'S SOCCER GAINS SPOT IN NEC TOURNAMENT WITH 1-1 TIE VS. THE MOUNT

    UMBC's Ricky Brown and Mt. St. Mary's Reid Shaklee each scored late first half goals, as the Retrievers (9-4-2, 6-3-1 NEC) and the Mountaineers (5-8-3, 3-5-2 NEC) battled to a 1-1 draw at chilly UMBC Soccer Stadium. The tie does guarantee UMBC a spot in the four-team NEC Tournament to be played at Quinnipiac on November 9 and 11.

    Senior defender Andy Wells celebrated his 22nd birthday in style, getting the game-winning goal just 1:40 into overtime as UMBC (6-2-1, 3-1) nipped Quinnpiac (4-3, 1-1), 2-1, in a Northeast Conference contest.

    Baltimore, MD-Freshman striker Derek McElligott (Greater Grace Christian Academy/Baltimore, MD) erupted for three second half goals and added an assist as UMBC (5-2-1, 2-1 NEC) blanked Central Connecticut (3-4, 0-2), 4-0, in a Northeast Conference match-up.

    But Sunday in Fairfield, CT was not as kind to the Retrievers. They fell behind in the 21st minute, but managed to tie the score at 28:51 on a goal by P.J. Wakefield. But SHU's Franco Cartiera got the game-winner at 31:53, and added an insurance marker at 65:00 minutes. UMBC would outshoot the Pioneers, 20-12, but could not rally in the final 25 minutes.

    William & Mary and UMBC battled on the soccer field for 120 minutes, with the result a 1-1 tie. UMBC held a 21-11 edge in shots during the match, but Tribe goalkeeper Billy Platz (Chesapeake, Va.) made eight saves in goal to help preserve the tie.

    Baltimore, MD-Senior forward Dominic DaPra scored a pair of goals to lead visiting Wisconsin (5-0) to a 4-2 victory over UMBC (3-1) before 663 fans at UMBC Soccer Stadium.
  • UMBC NIPS HOWARD IN OVERTIME

    Baltimore, MD-Senior back Andy Wells' successful penalty kick 4:44 into the first overtime gave UMBC (3-0) a 2-1 win over Howard (0-3) at UMBC Soccer Stadium. Retriever forward Franco Del Priore was pulled down while driving to the net at the 10-yard line. Wells, now 9 for 11 in his career in penalty kicks, calmly drilled the shot past the right side of Howard reserve netminder Jimmy Hernandez.

    Baltimore, MD-UMBC (2-0) scored on its first three shots of the game, and went on to a 3-0 victory over Delaware (1-1) in the championship game of the Kappa Kick Off Classic. Retriever freshman Derek McElligott (Greater Grace Christian Acad./Baltimore, MD) scored four goals in the tournament and earned Most Valuable Player honors.
