BALTIMORE – The UMBC men's lacrosse team opens its 2019 schedule with a Friday, Feb. 15 contest at the United States Naval Academy, head coach Ryan Moran announced today.
The Retrievers take on the Midshipmen at 7:00 p.m. that evening at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium, then quickly hop back on the road to face Richmond on Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 3:00 p.m.
Six of the final twelve games on the Retrievers' regular season schedule will be played at UMBC Stadium. The home opener is slated for Saturday, Feb. 23 when UMBC hosts Mount St. Mary's at 4:00 p.m.
The following Saturday, UMBC will welcome Brown University to UMBC Stadium. It will be the Bears' first visit since 2007. Brown reached the NCAA semi-finals in 2016.
After a visit to High Point on Saturday, March 9, the Retrievers open America East play when they host Vermont on Saturday, March 16 at noon. After a contest at Stony Brook the following Saturday, the Retrievers play a non-league foe for the final time in 2019, when Lafayette comes to Baltimore on Saturday, March 30.
The Retrievers play April home games versus league foes Binghamton (Sat., April 9) and UMass Lowell (Saturday, April 20, Senior Day), while playing 2018 national semifinalist Albany (Sat. April 13) and Hartford in the regular season finale (Sat., April 27) on the road.
The four-team America East Tournament will be played at the site of the regular season champion on May 2 and 4.
"The goal of creating the 2019 schedule was to create consistency and balance," said Moran. "In year three, we have been able to balance our home and away contests both in quantity and order. Furthermore, with eight of our 12 opponents competing in their respective conference tournaments last year, we have made a positive step in scheduling consistent competitive lacrosse week in and week out.
"As always, you want your February and March dates to battle-test you for conference play in April. We are excited about the opponents we have been able to keep on our schedule and welcome new additions in Brown and High Point."
UMBC returns 28 letterwinners and nine of ten players who started the final game of the 2018 campaign. Ten freshmen, two eligible red-shirts and one transfer round out the 41-man roster.
"The 2018 fall featured new additions to the staff, new rule changes to our game and 13 new faces to our roster," said Moran. "All those changes have been welcomed by this program and believe will all have a positive impact on our 2019 spring season."
