BOSTON – UMBC senior goalkeeper Ruston Souder (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) was tabbed America East Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week for games ending April 1, 2016.
Souder made nine saves, collected three ground balls and caused one turnover in the Retrievers' 10-6 league victory over UMass Lowell on Saturday. The Retrievers (4-5 overall) improved to 2-0 in America East play for the first time since 2012.
The team tri-captain back-stopped a Retriever defense that held UML scoreless for 38:34 as UMBC erased a 5-0 second quarter deficit and scored nine consecutive goals to rally for the victory. He made five saves and allowed just one score in the second half of play.
Souder, who has played all 540 minutes in 2017, now has a season-high save percentage of 50.7. In the last six games, he has made 59 saves, allowing 41 goals, a mark of 59.0 percent as the Retrievers have only permitted 6.5 goals per game in that 4-2 stretch.
UMBC faces nationally-ranked Albany (8-1, 3-0) on Saturday, April 8 in New York.
