Albany, N.Y. – UMBC junior defenseman Zach Esser (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) earned America East Conference First Team honors, it was announced this evening before tomorrow's league semifinals.
In addition, senior attackman Conor Finch (Westminster, Md./Boys Latin) earned a spot on the conference's All-Academic team.
Esser has earned first team honors in back-to-back campaigns. He led the squad in caused turnovers (16) for the third consecutive year and now has amassed 56 take-aways in 43 career games. Esser started all 13 games this spring and has been on the back line as a starter for 41 of 43 contests in three seasons. He added 27 ground balls for a career mark of 87 and has cut his penalties taken from 14 as a freshman to 11 as a sophomore, down to just 3-for-2:30 in 2015.
Finch, who suffered a torn ACL in the winter of 2014, came back for a fifth season this spring. A team captain, the midfielder-turned-attackman finished fifth on the squad with a career-best 17 points (8 goals, 9 assists). Finch maintains a 3.43 grade-point average and will earn bachelor's degrees in sociology, media and communication studies and American studies this spring.
