  • Men's Lacrosse Announces Recruiting Class Bound For UMBC This Fall

    BALTIMORE – UMBC head men’s lacrosse coach Don Zimmerman and his staff are pleased to announce the addition of 14 student-athletes to the Retriever program for the fall of 2015. The class of ’19 is a geographically diverse group, comprised of seven Maryland natives and seven players representing New York, New Jersey and California.

  • Men's Lacrosse Junior Defender Zach Esser Named to AE First Team

    Albany, N.Y. – UMBC junior defenseman Zach Esser earned America East Conference First Team honors, it was announced this evening before tomorrow’s league semifinals. In addition, senior attackman Conor Finch earned a spot on the conference’s All-Academic team.

    UMBC men’s lacrosse junior Nate Lewnes (Arnold, Md./St. Mary’s) and women’s lacrosse senior Abby Wilson (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) have been nominated for the 2015 America East Lacrosse Fans’ Choice Player of the Year, as announced by the conference office on Thursday.

    BALTIMORE – UMBC junior attackman Nate Lewnes (Arnold, Md./St. Mary’s) scored five goals and sophomore goalkeeper Ruston Souder (Pasadena, Md./Chespeake) scored on a 90-yard heave to end the third quarter as the host Retrievers defeated U Mass Lowell, 13-7, on “Senior Day” at UMBC Stadium.

    The UMBC men’s lacrosse team (4-7, 0-4 America East) completes the 2015 home slate on Saturday, April 18 when they welcome the UMass Lowell River Hawks (1-10, 0-5 AE) to UMBC Stadium for the first time. Nine UMBC seniors will be honored before the contest.

    West Hartford, Conn. – UMBC junior midfielder Mark Monroe (Williamsburg, Va.) scored the game-tying goal with 0.8 seconds left in regulation, but the host Hartford Hawks scored a fortuitous goal on their first possession of overtime and defeated the Retrievers, 9-8, at Al-Marzook Field.

The Retrievers defeated Mount St. Mary’s, 11-8, on Tuesday and now take on Lafayette for just the second time ever and the first time since 1988. The contest versus the Leopards on Friday, March 27 will be UMBC’s third in a seven-day span.     UMBC takes a break from America East Conference competition this week, as they take on two non-league foes at home. When contests versus Mount St. Mary’s and Lafayette have concluded, the Retrievers will have played three times in a seven-day span. The Retrievers welcome the Mount on Tuesday, March 24 in the 22nd meeting between the in-state rivals.

    Stony Brook, N.Y. – The UMBC defense held explosive Stony Brook to only six goals in the first three quarters, but the host Seawolves broke open a tight game in the final minutes, defeating the Retrievers, 12-6, at Kenneth P. La Valle Stadium.

    BALTIMORE – Visiting Binghamton (2-3, 1-0 America East) held UMBC (2-4, 0-1) scoreless for over 28 minutes and defeated the Retrievers, 13-4, in the America East opening game for both teams in rainy conditions at UMBC Stadium.UMBC sophomore midfielder Max Maxwell (Hamburg, N.Y.) was the lone multiple-point scorer for the hosts with a pair of assists.

    The UMBC men’s lacrosse team (2-3) opens its 12th season of America East Conference play on Saturday, March 14 when they host the Binghamton Bearcats at UMBC Stadium.     BALTIMORE – Fourteenth-ranked Towson (4-2) produced 4-0 scoring runs to start the game and the fourth quarter and defeated UMBC (2-3), 11-7, before 746 fans in the Retrievers’ 2015 home opener. UMBC junior midfielder Pat Young (Ewing, N.J.) led the hosts with a goal and a career-best three assists.

    After opening the 2015 campaign with four games on the road, the UMBC men’s lacrosse team (2-2) will play the first of its six home games on Saturday, March 7 when they meet the Towson Tigers for the 46th time. The opening face-off is set for 1:00 p.m. as Gary Stein and Kevin O’Neill handle the broadcast duties on Q1370 (www.q1370.com). Live stats will be available, but the game will not be streamed, due to recent inclement weather in the area.

    Richmond, Va. – UMBC junior midfielder Jack Gannon (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) scored three goals and added an assist and red-shirt sophomore goalkeeper Connon Gordon (Bourne, Mass.) turned aside 13 Richmond shots as the Retrievers never trailed in a 9-5 victory at Robins Stadium.
