UMBC midfielder J.D. Harkey (Loudon County/Purcellville, Va.) has been selected to play on the South squad in the 67th annual United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association North-South All-Star game. The contest will be played at Goucher College on Friday, May 27 at 5:30 p.m.
Harkey has competed for parts of five seasons with the Retrievers. After two seasons contributing as a defensive midfielder, he earned the starting face-off specialist position in 2009, but suffered a torn ACL early in the campaign. But he returned and became the 21st player in school history to win 100 or more draws in a season in 2010.
In 2011, the co-captain returned to play as a defensive middie and again became a prime contributor on that unit. He competed in 46 career games, scoring two goals and adding two assists, and recording 58 ground balls.
Harkey just completed a double major in political science and history.
He becomes the 51st UMBC player to compete for the South squad since 1970. The Retrievers have been represented at the game in 13 of the last 14 seasons.
