BALTIMORE—Sophomore attackman Scott Jones of the men’s lacrosse team was named UMBC Athlete of the Month for April 2011 in a poll of fans conducted from May 2-8. Jones received 337 of 854 total votes (39.5 percent) to edge runner-up Gaulthier Berret of men’s tennis (297 votes, 34.7 percent). Julia Culotta of softball, Alicia Krause of women’s lacrosse and Sara Parkinson of women’s track and field were also nominated.
Jones scored a team-best 12 goals and 16 points in six April games, during which time the Retrievers went 4-2. He scored the game-winner in all three America East victories, including one with 41 seconds left against Vermont that clinched UMBC’s eighth straight America East Tournament berth. The Port Coquitlam,British Columbia, native was named America East Player of the Week after recording five goals against Albany on April 16, including four in the fourth quarter.
After scoring just two goals as a freshman, Jones led UMBC with 23 in 2011, when he earned America East All-Conference Second Team honors. He had points in 12 of 13 games this season and posted his first multi-assist game with two helpers in the April 6 win over Towson. Jones ranked fourth in the league with 12 goals (2.40 per game) in five America East contests, and he had 18 goals and seven assists in his last nine outings of 2011.
