Sherburne Reaches 1,500-Point Mark, But UAlbany Outscores Retrievers, 84-75

ALBANY - UAlbany buried ten first-half treys and went on to defeat UMBC, 84-75, at SEFCU Arena.

 

The Danes halted UMBC's four-game winning streak and four-game road winning streak as the Retrievers fell to 18-11 and 10-4 in America East. UAlbany has won three straight and are now 11-17, 6-7.

 

Graduate student forward Joe Sherburne (Whitefish Bay, Wisc.) scored 13 points and became the seventh player in school history to reach the 1,500-point (1,503) plateau.

 

Junior guard K.J. Jackson (Houston, Texas) continued his torrid February, scoring 12 of his team-high 16 points in the first 20 minutes.

 

The Great Danes knocked down 13 treys, tying American for the most treys against the Retrievers this season. Freshman guard Cameron Healy hit 5-of-6 from long range for the game and led all scorers with 21 points.

 

UAlbany used early runs of 9-0 and 13-0 to take a 24-9 lead just 7:17 into the contest. The Danes buried 6 of their first 7 treys and 8-of-10 overall from the floor. The Retrievers would get as close as 26-19 after a 6-0 run, but UAlbany knocked down two more 3-pointers in the final 17 seconds of the half to lead, 46-28 at the break.

 

The hosts hit 10-of-16 shots from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes.

 

UMBC got to within 51-38 with 16 minutes to play in the second half, but another Healy trey extended the lead to 16.

 

The Retrievers scored 47 second half points, hitting 17-of-29 from the floor and 8-of-12 from long range. UMBC finished the game at 55.6 percent (30-of-54) from the floor and 3-point range (10-of-18).  

 

Freshman guard José Placer (Orlando, Fla.) hit 6-of-7 shots from the floor added 14 points for the guests. Sherburne added team highs of six rebounds and six assists.

 

UMBC turns right back around and will visit Long Island to take on Stony Brook on Wednesday, Feb. 27. Tip-off time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
