BOSTON – UMBC freshman guard Jose Placer (Orlando, Fla.) was named America East Conference Rookie of the Week for games ending January 19, 2019.
Placer scored a career-best 22 points, knocking down 8 of 11 shots from the field in the Retrievers' 65-64 overtime victory versus Albany on Saturday. He scored UMBC's first seven points of overtime before Ricky Council II's (Durham, N.C.) game-winning trey with five seconds left.
Placer's previous scoring high was 13 points, recording against High Point on Nov. 17.
The accolade was the first of the season for a Retriever.
Placer added four assists in the game and averaged 4.5 assists to go along with 14.5 points per game in UMBC's two victories on the week. He buried 11-of-16 shots, 3-of-6 treys and 4-of-5 free throws and increased his scoring average to 5.5 points per game.
UMBC (11-9, 3-2 America East) hits the road for games at league-leading Vermont (15-4, 5-0 AE) and UNH on Wednesday and Saturday respectively this week.
