2-0 Men's Basketball Returns Home For First-Time Meeting vs. Del State on Wednesday Evening

Game Notes, UMBC vs. Delaware State

The UMBC men's basketball team welcomes first-time foe Delaware State to the RAC Arena on Wed., Nov. 16. A 7:00 p.m. tip-off time is slated for the RAC Arena and the contest will be broadcast on www.americaeast.tv with Gary Stein and Paul Mittermeier on the call.

RETRIEVERS' UPDATE: Senior forward Will Darley scored 24 points and junior guard Jairus Lyles added 23, as visiting UMBC held off Maryland, Eastern Shore (0-2), 77-73 at Hytche Arena on Sunday.


Under new head coach Ryan Odom, the Retrievers are off to their first 2-0 start since the 2007-08 campaign.


Lyles added six caroms, a team-best six assists and three steals at The Shore. He leads the team at 20.5 points per game in the early going. Lyles scored 20 or more points for the 16th time in 23 UMBC games and his 15 field goals made through games of Nov. 13 was ranked 12th in the nation.


Darley is averaging 19.0 points per contest and has converted 31 treys (of 55,54.1%) in last eight games dating back to last season . His nine made treys were third-most in the nation in games through Nov. 13.


The road win at The Shore was the Retrievers' first away-opening victory since the 2007-08 championship season when they moved to 2-0 with a 76-69 triumph at La Salle.


Through games of Nov. 13, UMBC and UC Davis had made the second-most 3-pt. field goals (25) in the nation. Missouri State led the country with 27. The Retrievers were fifth with 68 3-pt. attempts.


As of games ending Nov. 13, UMBC was 17th in the nation in offensive rebounds per game with 19.5 per contest.


HORNET UPDATE: Delaware State is 1-1, with an opening 103-58 victory over Clarks Summitt offset by a 74-61 setback to Texas Southern. This contest will be the Hornets first on the road this season.


Senior guard DeAndre Haywood, who is the team's second-leading returning scorer (11.5 ppg) from a year ago, tied for game-high honors by scoring 20 points versus Texas Southern. He leads the Hornets in the early going with 17.0 points per game.


Delaware State has hit 18 of its first 36 shots from three-point land this season.


The Hornets and Retrievers posted identical 7-25 records a season ago. Delaware State struggled on the road, posting a mark of 1-17, but the road win occurred in Baltimore – a 71-67 win at Coppin in February.


THE SERIES: This will be the first match-up between the Retrievers and the Hornets.


WHO'S UP NEXT: UMBC takes on Kennesaw State on Saturday, Nov. 19 at the RAC Arena. The game is the nightcap of a doubleheader, as the women host Maryland, Eastern Shore at 1:00 p.m. Tip-off time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. or 30 minutes after the completion of the women's contest.
