BALTIMORE – UMBC men's basketball has announced its complete 2016-17 schedule, which features 14 home games for the first time since the 2009-10 campaign.
Game times for all home contests will be announced later this week.
The Retrievers open the season on Friday, Nov. 11, when they host Hood (Md.) College at the RAC Arena. UMBC stays in-state and visits Maryland-Eastern Shore on Sunday, Nov. 13, but returns home for back-to-back contests versus Delaware State on Wednesday, Nov. 16 and Kennesaw State on Saturday, Nov. 19.
UMBC will visit Navy on Thanksgiving Eve and takes off during the holiday weekend. Then, Ryan Odom's squad will leave the state for the first time, bound for Pittsburgh, Pa. and a meeting with Duquesne for the second consecutive season on Wednesday, Nov. 30.
The Retrievers open the month of December by welcoming Messiah (Pa.) on Saturday, Dec. 3. UMBC will serve as Mount St. Mary's first home foe when they head to Emmitsburg on Wednesday, Dec. 7. The Retrievers then face Richmond for the first time since the America East championship season of 2007-08 at the Robins Center on Saturday, Dec. 10.
UMBC will host local foe Towson (Sat., Dec. 17) and welcome The Citadel for the first time ever two days later. The squad completes the non-conference portion of the slate at James Madison on Friday, Dec. 23 and at Virginia Tech on Wednesday, Dec. 28.
Coach Odom was an assistant coach in Blacksburg from 2003-10.
UMBC opens its 14th America East campaign on Thursday, Jan. 5 when they host Binghamton and complete the home weekend with a Sunday contest (Jan. 8) versus Maine. The first AE road trip of the year takes the Retrievers to Hartford on Wednesday, Jan. 11 and to Vermont on Friday, Jan. 13.
The Retrievers will welcome America East power Albany to the RAC Arena on Martin Luther King, Jr., Day (Mon., Jan. 16).
UMBC completes the first cycle of league play at UMass Lowell (Sun., Jan. 22), at defending champion Stony Brook (Wed., Jan. 25) and at home versus New Hampshire (Sat., Jan. 28).
The Retrievers play a stretch of four of five at home in February, including a likely Senior Night date versus Stony Brook on Wednesday, Feb. 22.
UMBC concludes the regular season on Sat., Feb. 25 at UNH and opens the America East Playoffs on Wednesday, March 1 at the campus site of the higher seeded team.
Notes: UMBC has never faced Hood, Delaware State, or Messiah… The lone meeting versus The Citadel occurred in Charleston, S.C. in UMBC's first NCAA DI season of 1986-87… UMBC does not leave the Eastern Time zone for the first time since the 2011-12 season, a year in which they played at Indiana… UMBC opens at home in league play for just the second time in the last six campaigns.
