UMBC vs. Howard Game Notes

Winners of two of their last three contests, the UMBC Retrievers continue non-conference action on Saturday, Dec. 19, when they visit the Howard Bison at Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C. Tip-off time is slated for 4:00 p.m.

Gary Stein and Paul Mittermeier will have the call on Q1370 (, beginning at 3:55 p.m. Fans can also follow via the men's basketball program's Twitter feed (UMBC_MBB).

RETRIEVERS' UPDATE: Junior forward Will Darley recorded career highs in scoring and rebounding, tallying 23 points and 10 caroms, as the host Retrievers bested Mount St. Mary's, 75-63, at the RAC Arena on Saturday. The Retrievers (3-8) have won two of their last three contests and won for the first time at home (1-3) this season.

Red-shirt sophomore guard Rodney Elliott added 17 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists in the victory and freshman Joe Sherburne added 15 points.

Darley, who averaged 20.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game last week, earned America East Player of the Week honors, while Sherburne was tabbed the league's Rookie of the Week, presented by Under Armour. 

Sherburne leads the squad at 14.7 points per game (2nd, AE) and leads the team in 3-point field goals (32, 2.9 per game, 3rd in AE) and steals (17, 1.6 per game, 3rd in AE). 

In his return after missing the 2014-15 season due to injury, Elliott is scoring 13.5 points per game (7th in AE) and has scored in double figures in nine of his first 11 contests. The Baltimore native is is third with 4.1 assists per game.  Darley (11.0 ppg) and senior post Cody Joyce (10.4 ppg) also average in double figures for the Retrievers. Joyce, who competed in his 100th collegiate contest at Duquesne, leads UMBC with 5.3 caroms per contest. 

The Retrievers lead America East in turnover margin at +1.6 (12.0 per game, opponents, 13.6 per game). 

HOWARD UPDATE:  The Bison (6-5) lost a heartbreaker last Saturday, dropping a 92-91 double overtime decision to Radford when the Highlanders hit a trey with just over one second remaining in the final stanza. Junior guard James Daniel, III, scored 30 of his game-high 38 points in the second half, but the Bison lost for the first time at home (3-1) in 2015-16.

Howard won five consecutive games to end the month of November, including a 79-77 victory over William & Mary.

Daniel is currently leading the nation in scoring, averaging 29.4 points per game. Daniel has  been to the free throw line an astounding 116 times in 10 games, sinking 102 attempts (87.9%). Center Marcel Boyd scores 8.5 points per contest and the 6'10" junior leads the squad with 9.4 caroms per outing.

SERIES NOTES:  The two teams met for the first time since 1990-91 last November and the Bison defeated the Retrievers, 68-54. UMBC could never solve Howard's zone defense and the Retrievers dropped their home opener. UMBC shot just 36.4 percent from the floor, while Howard approached the 50 percent mark. 

Howard has won four of the five all-time meetings, including both contests in Washington, D.C.
