Boston – UMBC junior forward Cody Joyce (Churchton, Md./Southern) has been named to the America East Conference Second Team in a vote of the league's coaches.
Joyce, who transferred to UMBC from Houston Baptist this season, is currently fifth in the conference in scoring (13.5 ppg), sixth in rebounding (5.7) and eighth in field goal percentage (51.3%). In league play, the rugged post player finished second in scoring (16.1 ppg), fifth in rebounding (6.4) and eighth in field goal percentage (51.2%). He also tied teammate Devarick Houston for fifth place in blocked shots per game (0.9) and placed third in minutes played (35.9) per outing.
Joyce scored in double figures in 22 of 29 games and enters the America East Tournament by scoring in doubles in eight consecutive games. A career 55-percent free-throw shooter entering the season, Joyce hit 82 of 111 (73.9%) in league play, converting 5.1 free throws per contest.
Joyce just surpassed the 800-point plateau (809) in his career (89 games) and needs nine points to become the 18th player in UMBC's Division I history to score 400 in a season.
Joyce becomes the ninth Retriever to earn second team honors in 12 America East seasons.
The seventh-seeded Retrievers head to No. 2 Vermont for an America East quarter-final match-up on Wednesday evening. The game will be broadcast on Q1370AM (www.q1370.com), starting the pregame show at 6:55 p.m.
