Less than 24 hours after returning from Vermont, the UMBC men's basketball team heads back on the road and will face the Hartford Hawks on Tuesday evening, Feb. 17. RETRIEVER UPDATE: UMBC (3-22, 1-11 AE) played a solid first half of basketball at Vermont's Patrick Gym on Saturday, but succumbed to UVM's depth and efficiency and fell, 74-51, to the Catamounts. The Retrievers committed only one first half turnover and trailed just, 38-32, at intermission. Junior post Cody Joyce led UMBC with 13 points and freshman wing Malcolm Brent added 12. Joyce, the team leader with 13.0 points per game, averages 16.1 points per game in league play and leads America East in scoring. Guard Jourdan Grant needs one assist to become the sixth UMBC DI player to record 100 in his freshman campaign.
HAWK UPDATE: Hartford (12-13, 5-7 AE) has dropped six of its last seven games to fall into fifth place in the conference standings. UMass Lowell took a nine-point halftime lead and held on to defeat Hartford, 69-63 in Lowell on Saturday. UH misfired on 19 of 25 three-point attempts and half of its 18 free throw tries. America East All-Conference senior forward Mark Nwakamma (13.0 ppg, 6.1 rpg) scored 11 points and added 9 rebounds in the loss and leads UH in both categories. The Hawks have made 61 more treys (202-141) than its foes in 2014-15.
