Men's Basketball Takes to the Road for Wednesday Evening Clash at Stony Brook

UMBC at Stony Brook Game Notes, Jan. 14, 2015

UMBC ventures onto the road for the first time in America East Conference play when they travel to Long Island to take on Stony Brook at the refurbished Island Federal Credit Union Arena on Wednesday, Jan. 14. Tip-off time for the contest is set for 7:00 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on Q1370 and live video and stats links will be available via

RETRIEVER UPDATE: UMBC is coming off a tough homestand, where the Retrievers had great opportunities to triumph in three of the four defeats. The Retrievers dropped two games by three points and one in overtime. Grad student guard Wayne Sparrow had a chance to send Sunday's game versus UNH to overtime, but his three-point attempt at the buzzer was a hair too strong in the 63-60 Wildcat win.

Sparrow continues to lead UMBC (2-13, 0-2 AE) at 13.1 points per game, while freshman point guard Jourdan Grant leads the America East Conference in assists (4.3) per game and had 15 helpers and just two miscues in his first two AE contests. Junior post Cody Joyce (10.8 ppg, 5.7 rpg) has double-doubles in each of his first two league contests.

SEAWOLF UPDATE:  For the fourth straight week, Stony Brook (10-7, 1-1 AE) junior post Jameel Warney was named America East Player of the Week. Warney, who averaged 25.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in games against Columbia and Vermont, leads AE in both scoring (16.6) and rebounding (12.2). Junior guard Carson Puriefoy is third in the conference in scoring at 13.8 points per outing.  Stony Brook is a perfect 7-0 at home in 2014-15.

WHO'S UP NEXT:  UMBC returns home for two games in a short span, taking on Vermont on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and Hartford two days later in an MLK Day matinee (1:00 p.m.).
