BALTIMORE – UMBC sophomore guard Rodney Elliott (Baltimore, Md./John Carroll) will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, it was announced today by head coach Aki Thomas.
In addition, freshman forward Lamell Washington (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) will also miss the 2014-15 season after undergoing surgery last month on his knee.
Both players will apply for medical hardship waivers to retain three and four years of athletic eligibility respectively.
Elliott, the 2013-14 America East Rookie of the Year, suffered the shoulder injury in the opening contest of the season at Akron and has not appeared in any games since Nov. 14. The Baltimore native averaged 15.0 points and 3.9 rebounds per game as a freshman and also led the team in assists (108). His total of 451 points in 2013-14 set a new school record.
"Losing a player like Rodney clearly impacts what we do on both ends of the floor," said head coach Aki Thomas. "But I am very confident in the guys we have and their abilities to step up for this team."
