Men's Basketball Opens Home Slate Versus Aki Thomas' Alma Mater, Howard, on Tuesday Night

UMBC vs. Howard Game Notes, 11-25-14

After three road contests, UMBC will open its 13-game home slate on Tuesday, Nov. 25 when they host Howard University at the RAC Arena. Head Coach Aki Thomas earned his degree from Howard in 2002 and becomes UMBC's first Division I head mentor to coach against his alma mater. Tip-off time is set for 7:35 p.m., or 30 minutes after the Retriever women conclude their contest versus Towson. Gary Stein and Paul Mittermeier have all the play-by-play action on (Q1370 AM ,,starting with the pregame show at 7:25 p.m.


RETRIEVER UPDATE: The UMBC defense has been stellar in the early going, as Retriever opponents have hit less than 40 percent from the floor and under 30 percent from behind the arc. But the Retrievers have failed to break the 60-point mark in losses at Akron, Loyola (Md.) and Minnesota. Grad student guard Wayne Sparrow scored a career high 16 points at Minnesota and leads the way at 12.3 points per outing. Junior post Cody Joyce is at 11.7 points per game and has hit 50 percent from the floor.


BISON UPDATE: Sophomore guard James Daniel scored 14 points in a balanced effort as Howard built a 29-point halftime lead and cruised past Hood College, 78-51, at Burr Gymnasium on Nov. 23. The win snapped a two-game slide as HU lost single-digit contests at William & Mary (56-49) and Radford (61-52) in the span of three days. Daniel leads Howard at 16.0 points per outing and is converting 2.6 treys per outing. Senior wing James Carlton averages 8.6 points and a team-high 7.0 caroms per contest. HU is outrebounding opponents by nearly ten per game in the early going.
