Joyce Scores 13; UMBC Falls, 74-57, to Akron on Friday


Akron, Ohio-- The UMBC men's basketball team fell, 74-57 to Akron on Friday night to open the season. Junior Cody Joyce led the charge with 13 points and five rebounds. UMBC falls to 0-1 on the year.

UMBC came out blazing to open the game. Junior Cody Joyce (Churchton, Md./Southern) had back to back baskets to put the Retrievers up early. The Zips would fight back, gaining a 7-6 lead before graduate student Wayne Sparrow (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances) hit a transition lay-up to give UMBC an 8-7 lead at the first media timeout.

The Retrievers would continue hot start, going on a 10-3 run to extend their lead to 18-12. Sophomore Rodney Elliott (Baltimore, Md./John Carroll) hit a pair of trifectas during the spurt. Akron would answer the run. The Zips outscored the Retrievers 13-2 over a four minute span to regain the lead.

From there, Akron opened up a 30-22 lead, holding UMBC scoreless for just about five minutes. Joyce ended the run with a beautiful reverse and one layup to cut the deficit to just eight. The Zips would close the half however with a 11 point lead, at 37-26.

The second stanza saw a Devarick Houston (Jonesboro, Ga./Mays) alley-oop off a beautiful feed. From there the Zips would push ahead thanks in part to a 5-2 run to take a 42-28 lead at the first media timeout. Akron would hold serve throughout the middle part of the half, outscoring the Retrievers 15-8 in the first nine minutes of the second half.

Jourdan Grant (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) would try and bring the Retrievers back, scoring four straight in the latter part of the half to cut into the deficit. However it was not enough, as Akron would hold on to win 74-57.

Joyce lead the team with 13 points, adding in five rebounds. Elliott, Grant and Houston would each add nine to fuel the Retriever offense. Houston chipped in a team high seven rebounds in the loss.

The Retrievers are back in action on Wednesday, November 19th when they travel to in-state rival Loyola. The game with the Greyhounds begins at 8:00 p.m.
