Men's Basketball Reveals 2014-15 Schedule; Home Opener vs. Howard on Nov. 25

The UMBC men's basketball team opens its 2014-15 schedule with three consecutive road contests, before debuting at the RAC Arena on Tuesday, Nov. 25 versus the Howard Bison. The entire 29-game schedule, which includes the Retrievers' 16-contest America East slate, was announced today by head coach Aki Thomas.

The Retrievers open the campaign by traveling to Akron, Ohio to face the Zips for the first-time ever on Friday, Nov. 14. Five days later, UMBC will resume the series and seek revenge at Loyola, after the Greyhounds prevailed in overtime, 89-83, at the RAC Arena last season. UMBC completes the opening road swing of the campaign at Minnesota on Saturday, Nov. 22.

The black and gold will debut at home on Tuesday, Nov. 25 against Coach Thomas' alma mater. That weekend, UMBC and Towson get together for the 58th time, with this meeting occurring at the RAC Arena on Saturday, Nov. 29.

"It's going to be a great experience to open up at home versus my alma mater," Thomas said. "Playing local rivals Loyola and Towson are always tough, hard-fought games for our fans to enjoy."

The Retrievers begin December with four consecutive road contests, including a Dec. 6 date at another Big Ten foe in the Iowa Hawkeyes. UMBC will play three of its final four non-conference foes at home, including dates with Longwood (Sun., Dec. 14), Lehigh (Sun., Dec. 28) and NJIT (Fri., Jan. 2).

UMBC opens its 12th America East campaign with home games versus UMass Lowell (Wed., Jan. 7) and New Hampshire (Sun., Jan. 11). After a trip to Stony Brook on Wed., Jan. 14, the Retrievers quickly return home and face conference favorites Vermont (Sat., Jan. 17) and Hartford (Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, Mon., Jan. 19) in a three-day span.

The Retrievers then play six of eight on the road, before closing out the home schedule versus defending AE champion Albany (Sat., Feb. 21) and Maine (Wed., Feb. 25). UMBC concludes the regular season at Binghamton on Saturday, Feb. 28.

"America East teams have all improved and have added some good talent across the board," Thomas said. "This should make for some exciting games this winter."

For the first time in 12 league seasons, UMBC will compete in a changed format in the America East Championships. Each round will be played at the site of the higher seed, beginning with the quarterfinals on Wed., March 4. The semifinals take place at the highest remaining seeds on Sat., March 7, with the title game slated for Sat., March 14.

"The new post season format will be great for fans," Thomas said. "It will be nice to see crowded arenas in March as America East teams battle for a championship."

Game times, ticket availability and media plans for 2014-15 Retriever basketball will be released shortly.
