Cambridge, Mass. – For the first time in the eight-year history of the award, a member of the UMBC Retriever men's basketball team has been selected as America East Fans' Choice Player of the Year.
Moreover, UMBC guard Rodney Elliott (Baltimore, Md./John Carroll) becomes the first freshman to earn the selection in the sport of men's basketball.
One of the top freshmen in the America East this season, Elliott earned 478 of the 1,535 (31%) of the total votes that were cast by fans "Liking" or "Sharing" the rookies photo on the conference Facebook page. He edged out Vermont's Brian Voelkel, who had 332 total votes. Elliott leads all freshmen and ranks fourth in the conference, averaging 14.9 points per game. He is a five-time Rookie of the Week selection and averages a team-best 3.5 assists per game.
Nine nominees (one from each school) were named to each ballot on Feb. 26. Over 3,500 fans voted for the awards on the league's Facebook page through 3 p.m. on March 4.
Elliott joins fellow Retrievers and Baltimore natives Pete Caringi III (Calvert Hall) and Alexa Quaranta (Perry Hall), who were selected as Fans' Choice Players of the Year for the sports of men's and women's soccer in the fall.
