Cambridge, Mass. - For the second time in his young career, UMBC freshman guard Rodney Elliott (Baltimore, Md./John Carroll) has been named America East Conference Men's Basketball Rookie-of-the-Week. The most recent honor is for games ending Dec. 15, 2013.
UMBC competed just once last week, but Elliott scored in double figures for the fourth consecutive game in the Retrievers' 91-71 setback at Coppin State on Dec. 11. He scored 16 points in 21 minutes of action and tied his season-high with six assists. The freshman point guard hit 6-of-7 free throws and 2-of-4 shots from behind the arc.
Elliott leads the Retrievers in five categories, including scoring average (14.1 ppg) and assists (3.6) per game. He is currently ninth in America East in scoring, third in assists, and third in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.1).
Elliott has scored more points (155) through 11 games than any freshman in the UMBC's Division I (1986-87) era. He earned his first award of the season for contests ending Nov. 17 after averaging 17.7 points per game in a three-game span.
Elliott and his teammates are in the exam period this week and do not return to action until Sat., Dec. 21 when they visit George Washington.
