Four UMBC Basketball Players Among Nominees for America East Fans’ Choice Player of the Year

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Voting for the 2011 America East Men's and Women's Basketball Fans' Choice Player of the Year has opened at, and four Retrievers are among the 32 nominees. Junior guards Erin Brown (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) andMichelle Kurowski (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) represent UMBC on the women's ballot, while junior guard Chris De La Rosa (Washington Heights, N.Y./All Hallows/Siena) and senior forward Justin Fry (New Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) are the Retrievers on the men's ballot.


Kurowski and Brown have established themselves as two of the best players in the America East this season, as each rank among the top six scoring leaders in the conference.

Chris De La Rosa

Kurowski leads the league in scoring with 15.2 points per game, and she ranks 16th in the NCAA with an .882 free throw percentage. She also leads UMBC with 1.8 steals per game while also averaging 5.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists per contest and shooting 39.9 percent from the floor. Kurowski currently ranks ninth all-time at UMBC with 1,192 career points, and she has ranked in the top 10 in the America East in scoring in each of her three seasons.


Brown has rebounded from an injury-marred sophomore campaign to post a career year in 2010-11. She ranks sixth in the league with 13.7 points per game, including 17.7 ppg in her last six contests. In addition, she leads the Retrievers with 5.8 rebounds per game and 52 three-pointers while shooting 38.7 percent from the floor and 86.2 percent from the foul line.

Justin Fry

De La Rosa leads the America East with 6.4 assists per game and has been ranked as high as sixth nationally this season. He is also the conference's third-leading scorer, averaging 16.1 points per game and recorded 20 or more points in four consecutive games earlier this season, one shy of a UMBC Division I mark. With his scoring and assist numbers, De La Rosa is directly responsible for more than 53 percent of UMBC's offense this season.

Fry has posted career highs in scoring and rebounding after returning from season-ending knee surgery a year ago. He is averaging 10.1 points per game in America East contests and is ranked fifth in field goal percentage (.505) and third in free throw percentage (.921) in league play. Fry has played in 116 games at UMBC, tied for fourth place on the school's all-time list.


Preliminary voting for the America East Men's and Women's Basketball Fans' Choice Player of the Year runs through Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 12 p.m. Five finalists will be named to the final ballot of voting, which will close Monday, Feb. 28, at 12 p.m.. The women's winner will be announced on on Tuesday, March 1, while the men's winner will be announced in the same manner on Wednesday, March 2.
