Men's Basketball To Face Torrid Notre Dame Squad in South Bend on Wednesday Evening

UMBC will face its second nationally-ranked Big East opponent of the season, when the Retrievers make their first visit to No. 20/22 Notre Dame on Wednesday, Dec. 22. Fans can catch all the action on Fox 1370 Sports Radio ( with Paul Mittermeier on the call, beginning with the pregame show at 7:20 p.m.


RETRIEVER UPDATE: After holding American University below 40 percent shooting from the field, UMBC slipped back and host Morgan State hit 23 of 38 shots (60.5 percent) in a 75-62 win on Dec. 18. In both games, UMBC trailed by 20+ points, trimmed deficits to single digits before succumbing down the strech. Junior guard Chris De La Rosa (team-high 14.6 ppg) had an outstanding week, averaging 19.0 points and 8.0 assists per game.


IRISH UPDATE: Notre Dame is off to a 10-1 start, including wins over America East favorites Maine (97-72) and, most recently, Stony Brook (88-62). The Irish feature eight players at 6-foot-8 or taller, including forward Tim Abromaitis, who averages 15.6 points and a team-high 7.2 rebounds per outing. Guard Ben Hansbrough leads a potent and balanced attack with 15.8 points per game. Baltimore-area freshmanEric Atkins (Mount St. Joseph) has played in all 11 games and the guard averages 7.0 points per game.


Who's Up Next: UMBC plays its final game of the 2010 calendar year and ultimate non-conference game on Dec. 30, when they host Niagara (7:05 p.m.). The Retrievers open America East play by hosting Stony Brook on Sunday, Jan. 2 at 5:05 p.m.
