UMBC Athletics started renovations earlier this month to its 3,000 square-foot varsity weight room, which will be renamed the Michael S. Knapp Varsity Weight Training Center.
Phase I of the project will include the demolition, repair and painting of the existing walls in the center; the addition of a new ceiling and ventilation system, an expanded office complex, and new rubberized flooring. This phase is expected to be completed later this summer.
Phase II will include new lighting, HVAC units, glass walls and replacement/additional equipment.
“In our exit surveys and what SAAC identified as its number one issue, our student-athletes made it clear that the enhancement of this facility was extremely important,” Director of Athletics Dr. Charles Brown said. “Despite the current difficult economic climate, with the support of Mr. Knapp and others, we are excited to be able to gradually build the center into a first-class facility. I believe this will pay huge dividends for our program in the coming years.”
