UMBC Baseball Closes Out the 2019 Season Against Fairfield on Saturday

Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC baseball concludes the 2019 season on Saturday against the Stags with senior day ceremonies taking place prior to the first game. UMBC is coming off a tough 4-3 loss to Georgetown on Tuesday night and sit at 21-30 on the year. The Retrievers led for most of the game, but the Hoyas rallied with a solo home run in the eighth pushing them over the top.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-UMBC enters the contest at 21-30, playing their final two games of the 2019 season against the Stags. The Retrievers are coming off a tough 4-3 loss to Georgetown on Tuesday night. UMBC led for most of the game, but the Hoyas scored four unanswered to sink the Retrievers.

-Ryan Brown (Hagerstown, Md./St. James/Charleston Southern) has been on fire at the plate in recent weeks, bumping his average up to .339, the best on the team. AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) leads the team with 43 RBI, 19 doubles and six home runs with Terrence Pinkston (La Plata, Md./McDonough/Norfolk State) has collected a team high 57 hits for a .313 average with 27 stolen bases.

-On the mound, Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Good Counsel/Appalachian State) leads the pitching staff with a 3.81 ERA and 5-5 record in 18 appearances. He has struck out 62 batters in 49.2 innings of work.

Scouting the Stags:

-Fairfield comes into the contest at 30-22, 15-9 MAAC, having clinched a spot in the MAAC Tournament next week. The Stags most recently dropped a 6-3 contest to UMass on Tuesday afternoon and are 17-13 in road games this year.

-Jack Gethings leads the Stags at the plate batting .381 with 80 hits, 41 runs scored and seven triples on the year. Anthony Boselli has driven in 44 runs with 68 hits and a .338 average.

-On the mound, Eli Oliphant leads the staff with a 2.14 ERA in 18 appearances out of the bullpen with five saves. Austin Pope leads the rotation with a 2.94 ERA in 12 starts and a team best 73 strikeouts.

All-Time Series:

-UMBC and Fairfield have met 12 times prior to Saturday with the Stags leading the all-time series 7-5. The last time the two met was in 2011, where Fairfield took two of three in Baltimore. Every game except one has been played in Baltimore in the series.

Wright in Record Books:

-AJ Wright will be playing his final games as a Retriever on Saturday, and will leave Baltimore with his mark being left on the program. He is currently eighth in games played (191), sixth in at bats (692), sixth in walks (97), seventh in stolen bases (27), and tied for second in doubles (61).

#ThankYouSeniors:

-The Retrievers will honor seven players who will be playing at Alumni Field for the final time on Saturday. Matt Shatto (Lancaster, Pa.), Joe Milkowski (Lackawanna, N.Y.), Andy Rozylowicz (Annapolis, Md./DeMatha), Pinkston, Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa.), Schoch and Wright will all be honored prior to the game.

Stealing Bases:

-UMBC is on pace to reset all records in the stolen bases categories this year, records that were last broken during the team's historic 2015 season. This year the Retrievers have stolen 109 bases which ranks second in program history, just behind the 2015 team who stole 113 bags. They have attempted 131 steals, just 13 behind first place at 144 back in 2015.

-Terrence Pinkston has stolen 27 bases, just two behind first place in a single season set by Anthony Gatto and Kevin Lachance in 2015. Blaze O'Saben (Warrenton, Va.) is not far behind with 25 thefts.
