Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC baseball snapped a six-game losing streak in an 8-4 win against Coppin State on Wednesday. Ryan Brown (Hagerstown, Md./St. James/Charleston Southern) and Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa.) each had three RBI in the win.
The Retrievers improve to 21-26 while the Eagles fall to 24-22.
UMBC got the scoring started with a three spot in the third. AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) singled in Terrence Pinkston (La Plata, Md./McDonough/Norfolk State) to give UMBC a 1-0 lead. Raven Beeman followed up with a two-run single that scored Wright and Ryan Brown to give UMBC a 3-0 lead.
The Eagles would answer the next half inning scoring two runs to make it a one run contest. However, the Retrievers would take control of the game with a four spot in their half of the inning. Wright picked up his second RBI of the game, scoring Jack Finn (Ellicott City, Md./Rider). Brown added to the tally with a two-RBI single and Beeman singling home a run to make it 7-2 after four.
Coppin State would continue to fight, getting a two-RBI single to cut the lead to just 7-4. UMBC would find a response in the form of a Brown single that scored Pinkston in the sixth.
From there the Retrievers held the Eagles at the plate with Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Good Counsel/Appalachian State) came in and shut the door for his third save of the year.
Tanner Esposito (Williamsport, Pa.) picked up his third win of the year going five strong innings, scattering seven hits and four earned runs.
Brown and Beeman drove in three runs with Wright adding two RBI.
UMBC will now travel to UMass Lowell for the final America East series of the year. The Retrievers need to win the series to remain alive for the America East Tournament.
