UMBC Baseball Hosts Delaware, Coppin State This Week

Baltimore, Md.-- The Retrievers conclude their six-game home stand against Delaware and Coppin State on Tuesday and Wednesday as UMBC has just eight games remaining in the regular season. Most recently, the Retrievers dropped two to Binghamton on Saturday, with their series finale being washed out due to rain on Sunday as UMBC sits at 20-25, 6-14 AE on the year.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-The Retrievers come into the midweek at 20-25 after dropping their last five contests. Most recently, UMBC dropped a pair of America East contests to Binghamton last Saturday by scores of 13-4 and 7-5. UMBC is 8-11 at home this year compared to 9-13 on the road.

-Terrence Pinkston (La Plata, Md./McDonough/Norfolk State) leads the team at the plate with 53 hits and a .327 average. AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) has been on fire at the plate, upping his average to .285 having started every game. He has 45 hits, and a team best 18 doubles, six home runs and 41 RBI, slugging .538.

-On the bump, Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Good Counsel/Appalachian State) leads the pitching staff with a 3.65 ERA in 44.1 innings with 56 strikeouts and a 5-4 record in 15 appearances.

Scouting the Blue Hens:

-Delaware enters the contests at 19-28 on the year, taking two of three from CAA foe UNCW this past weekend. The Blue Hens won the first two contests before falling in the finale to win the series. Delaware is stellar on their home field with a 13-6 record, but are just 6-21 away from Newark.

-Joseph Carpenter leads the team at the dish with a .297 average with a team best 52 hits and four triples. Jordan Hutchens has scored a team best 30 times while driving in 37 with nine stolen bases to lead the Blue Hens.

-Brandon Walter leads the pitching staff in almost statistical category. He has thrown 70.2 innings with 95 strikeouts and a 4-5 record with a 3.18 ERA.

Scouting the Eagles:

-Coppin State comes into the contest at 24-21 having lost their last four including a three-game sweep at the hands of Delaware State this past weekend. The game with the Retrievers will be their final regular season game before the MEAC Tournament next week.

-Justin Banks and Nazier McIlwain are leading the team with a .399 and .313 batting average respectively. Banks is the team leader with 61 hits, 15 doubles, five home runs and 42 RBI while McIlwain has a triple and 37 runs scored.

-Corey Treyes and Brandon Redfern both have a sub 3.00 ERA to lead the Eagle pitching staff. Treyes has a 2.84 ERA in 18 appearances with seven saves out of the bullpen. Redfern has a 2.93 ERA and a 3-2 record with 51 strikeouts in 43.0 innings of work.

All-Time Series:

-The Retrievers and Blue Hens have met 46 times prior to Tuesday, including once this year with Delaware leading 39-17. Earlier this year the Retrievers took a 7-4 decision in Newark that saw Stephen Schoch break the all-time career saves record. UMBC has won the last four meetings.

-UMBC and Coppin State will also be meeting for the second time with UMBC winning 16-2 in mid-March. The Retrievers lead the all-time series 48-3, having lost just once in the last 15 years.

On Deck:

-UMBC will travel to UMass Lowell for their final America East series of the year. The Retrievers will need to win the series and get some help the following week to earn a spot in the America East Tournament.
