Baltimore, Md.-- AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) smashed a two-run home run in the sixth inning of game two to help lead UMBC to an 8-6 win and split with Stony Brook on Saturday. UMBC improves to 20-20, 6-11 AE on the year, their fifth straight 20 win season.
Both starting pitchers started off the game strong with neither side gaining much offense through the first three innings. Stony Brook finally broke through with a par of runs in the fourth, getting three more in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead.
The Retrievers found their footing in their half of the fifth. Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a Blaze O'Saben (Warrenton, Va.) double. Terrence Pinkston (La Plata, Md./McDonough/Norfolk State) would bring both men home with a double to cut it to 5-2. He would later score on an AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) RBI groundout to make it 5-3 after five.
However, that would be all the Retrievers would get, as starter Greg Marino held the Retrievers at bay till he was relieved in the eighth. The Seawolves would add six more runs the rest of the way to take game one 11-3.
Pinkston led the way with a pair of RBIs and three of the nine Retriever hits in game one.
Stony Brook picked up where they left off in game one, putting up five runs in the top of the first to take an early lead. UMBC would respond with a run in their half with Wright doubling in Pinkston.
The Seawolves got that run back in the second, but the Retrievers would score the next six runs to cut the deficit to just one. Joey Goodwin singled in Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa.) to make it 6-2 after two. Goodwin would drive in another in the fourth, with O'Saben and Pinkston hitting RBI singles to make it 6-5 after four.
AJ Wright provided the heroics in the sixth blasting his team best sixth home run of the year, a two-run shot to push UMBC in front 8-6.
Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Good Counsel/Appalachian State) came on and shut the door to earn a split on Saturday.
Wright and Beeman each had three hits in the win with Wright driving in three runs.
The Seawolves and Retrievers will conclude the series tomorrow starting at noon.
