Baltimore, Md.— Senior infielder AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) led the charge in an 8-2 victory against the Hawks to close out the series with a win. Wright was just a single shy of the cycle in the contest, leading things off with a big two-run home run in the first.
UMBC improves to 19-18, 5-10 AE while the Hawks fall to 13-22, 7-5 AE.
Hartford got on the board in the first with back to back hits putting the Hawks in front. However, the Retrievers had the answer in their half. Terrence Pinkston (La Plata, Md./McDonough/Norfolk State) singled in his first at bat and would later score on an AJ Wright two-run home run to give UMBC a 2-1 lead after one.
Wright struck again in the second, this time doubling home Pinkston and Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) to push the Retriever advantage to 4-1 in the third. Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) made it 5-1 when he scored Wright on a squeeze bunt.
Hartford would respond with a run in their half of the fourth, cutting the Retriever lead to just 5-2. The Dawgs would answer in the sixth, pushing that lead back to four with a Ryan Brown (Hagerstown, Md./St. James/Charleston Southern) double down the right field line that scored Goodwin.
After another pair of runs in the seventh made it 8-2, Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Good Counsel/Appalachian State) came on and shut the door on the Hawks for the 8-2 win.
Andy Rozylowicz (Annapolis, Md./DeMatha) picked up the win in 3.2 innings of relief after picking up a save in game one. Wright had three hits to lead the way at the plate, driving in four runs.
UMBC will return to action on Tuesday, April 23 when they head to cross-town rival Towson for a 3 p.m. start.
