Albany, N.Y.—UMBC baseball held a lead early, but the Great Danes scored five unanswered runs to take a 7-2 decision in the series finale on Sunday. The Retrievers could only muster five hits in the contest, with Colin Casey (Ipswich, Mass.) collecting two of the five.
UMBC falls to 16-16, 3-9 AE while the Great Danes improve to 14-16, 6-6 AE on the year.
The Retrievers got off to a fast start, getting a run in the first. Terrence Pinkston (La Plata, Md./McDonough/Norfolk State) led off the game getting hit with a pitch and advanced on a wild pitch. AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) drove him home with a double to left to give UMBC the early lead.
The Great Danes would respond with a pair in their half of the first to take the lead, but that would be short lived, as UMBC answered the next half inning. Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa.) drew a one out walk and would score on an Andres Machado (Coral Gables, Fla.) double to right center to tie the game at 2-2.
However, UAlbany would score the last five runs in the game, holding the Retrievers to just three hits the rest of the way in a 7-2 win for the Great Danes.
Casey was the lone Retriever with multiple hits, going 2-4 from the plate. Wright and Machado each had an RBI and a hit with Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) collecting the other hit.
UMBC will return to Baltimore for a pair of midweek contests against Towson on Tuesday and Eastern Shore on Wednesday. Tuesday will begin at 6 p.m. and Wednesday at 3:30 both at Alumni Field.
