Red Hot UMBC Baseball Hosts Navy on Wednesday; Pinkston, Esposito Earn #AEBASE Honors

Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC baseball has won their last seven games, going 8-2 in their last ten and sit at 12-11 entering Wednesday's meeting with Navy at Alumni Field. The Retrievers are coming off a four-game sweep of Mount St. Mary's this past weekend, that saw the Retrievers extend their win streak and have a winning record for the first time since the first weekend this year. Terrence Pinkston (La Plata, Md./McDonough/Norfolk State) and Tanner Esposito (Williamsport, Pa.) earned America East Player and Rookie of the Week honors on Tuesday for their efforts in a 6-0 week.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-UMBC comes into the contest riding a seven-game win streak and sit at 12-11 on the year after sweeping a four-game series with Mount St. Mary's this past weekend. The Retrievers capped the series with a 6-5 comeback win on Sunday to go over .500 for the first time this year since the opening weekend.

-Terrence Pinkston and Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) have led the Retrievers all year, and are the only two batting over .300. Pinkston leads the team with a .393 average with 33 hits, 25 runs scored and 10 doubled. Torres is hitting .368 with 32 hits, nine doubles and a team best three triples, three home runs and 26 RBI. Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) and Blaze O'Saben (Warrenton, Va.) have also made significant contributions to the top of the order with 21 and 24 hits respectively.

-Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Good Counsel/Appalachian State) leads the pitching staff with a 5.48 ERA, sporting a 2-2 record in 21.1 innings with a team best 25 strikeouts. Nick Trabacchi (Smithtown, N.Y.) has started six games with a 2-2 record in a team best 28.2 innings, fanning 18 batters.

Scouting the Midshipmen:

-Navy makes the short trek to Baltimore with a 21-9 overall record, going 9-2 in Patriot League games this year. Most recently, the Mids earned a three-game sweep against Patriot League foe Lafayette this past weekend on the road. Navy will host Coppin State on Tuesday before taking on the Retrievers on Wednesday.

-Zach Stevens leads the Midshipmen batting .415 on the year, also boasting a team best 27 runs scored. Christian Hodge leads the team with eight home runs and 35 RBI with a .325 average, smashing five homers and driving in 16 RBI last week.

-On the hill, Noah Song leads the rotation, sporting a 5-0 record in 46.2 innings with a 1.54 ERA. Song leads the country striking out a total of 90 batters so far this season. Trey Braithwaite leads the bullpen and the team with a 1.26 ERA.

All-Time Series:

-This will be the 28th meeting all-time between UMBC and Navy, and the second this year. UMBC leads the all-time series 26-21, however Navy took the earlier meeting this year 13-4 in Annapolis.

-UMBC has won six of the last ten meetings, including the last two matchups in Baltimore. Last year, the Midshipmen won the only meeting 7-0 in Annapolis in late February.

Conference Honors:

-Terrence Pinkston and Tanner Esposito were named America East Co-Player and Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday afternoon. The duo helped lead the Retrievers to a 6-0 week, and extend their win streak to seven games.

-Pinkston hit .577 in six games, slugging 1.077 with four doubles and three home runs. He scored 10 times, driving in nine with one of his home runs coming as an inside the park home run. Esposito dazzled in his lone start this week, throwing six strong innings giving up just one earned run with seven strikeouts in a win against Coppin State.

-The duo join Christian Torres, Blaze O'Saben and Ethan Wentzlaff (Damascus, Md./Damascus) in earning weekly conference awards this year.

On Deck:

-UMBC will head north for a weekend set against Maine this Saturday and Sunday. The Retrievers and Black Bears will play two on Saturday with a single game on Sunday, both days starting at noon.
