UMBC Baseball Returns to the Diamond at Navy on Thursday; Host Delaware State This Weekend

Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC baseball returns to action against Navy on Thursday in Annapolis before hosting Delaware State in a three-game set this weekend. The Retrievers are coming off a weekend series at Miami that saw the Retrievers hang tough with the Canes, but ultimately falling in all three games to fall to 2-4 on the year.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-UMBC comes into the weekend at 2-4 coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of ACC foe Miami last weekend. The Retrievers hung tough with the Hurricanes but ultimately fell in all three games to fall to 2-4 on the year.

-Terrence Pinkston (La Plata, Md./McDonough/Norfolk State) leads the team at the plate batting .350 with a team best seven hits having started every game this year. Freshman Ethan Wentzlaff is batting .316 with six hits and five RBI. Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) leads the team with six RBI, belting a home run earlier this year.

-On the mound, Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Good Counsel/Appalachian State) leads the pitching staff with a 3.00 ERA in two appearances, going 0-1 with one save in six innings with nine strikeouts. Aaron Husson (Hawley, Pa.) leads the rotation with a 4.70 ERA in 7.2 innings.

Scouting the Midshipmen:

-The Mids come into the midweek contest at 5-6 overall and are in the midst of a nine-game home stand, winning their last three games and are 4-1 this year in Annapolis. Most recently Navy defeated Delaware State 11-3 on Tuesday afternoon. Navy was able to capitalize on six Hornets errors in the game.

-Liam Lowery and Christian Hodge are both batting at or over .300 on the year, with Lowery hitting .306 and Hodge batting .300. Lowery leads the team with seven RBI while Hodge has a team-high 12 hits with five runs scored.

-Noah Song leads the pitching staff with a 1-0 record in three starts, having not surrendered an earned run in 18.2 innings. Song has also struck out 36 batters to just eight walks.

Scouting the Hornets:

-Delaware State enters the weekend set at 4-5 on the year, having most recently dropped an 11-3 decision to Navy. The Hornets took two of three from Marist last weekend in Dover, Del. winning the final two games of the series after falling in game one.

-Arthur Burrell is leading the team at the plate, hitting .400 in five games and 15 plate appearances. He has six hits with two runs scored. Miguel Rivera leads the team with 10 hits and four runs scored.

-On the mound, Sean McGrath leads the rotation with a 2.08 ERA in three appearances and two starts. He sports a 1-0 record in 13.0 innings pitched. Garrett Lawson leads the staff with 19 strikeouts in 18.1 innings.  

All-Time Series:

-This will be the 47th all-time meeting between the two rivals with the Midshipmen leading the series 26-20. The two only met once last year with Navy defeating the Retrievers 7-0 in Annapolis. Before that, the Retriever had won the last five contests dating back to 2015.

-UMBC and Delaware State will be meeting for the first time since 2016 and have met 27 times before with the Retrievers leading the all-time series 17-10. UMBC defeated the Hornets 3-2 in extra innings in Baltimore in 2016 in mid-May.

Conference Honors:

-Junior Christian Torres and freshman Ethan Wentzlaff were named America East Player and Rookie of the Week for their efforts against UNC Asheville. Both Torres and Wentzlaff finished the weekend with five RBI, with Torres connecting on three extra base hits.

On Deck:

-UMBC will remain at home, hosting Mount St. Mary's in midweek action on Tuesday, March 12 with first pitch at 6 p.m.
