Coral Gables, Fla.-- UMBC baseball went toe-to-toe with with the Hurricanes on Saturday night, ultimately falling 3-2 on a late go-ahead run by the Canes in the eighth. Senior AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) led the way with two hits, driving in one of the two runs. Freshman Blaze O'Saben (Warrenton, Va.) hit his first career home run in the loss.
UMBC falls to 2-3 while Miami improves to 8-2.
The Canes got things going in the first, getting a run across after a double steal to take a 1-0 lead.
UMBC wasted little time getting the tying run, pushing it across in the second. Ethan Wentzlaff (Damascus, Md./Damascus) led off the inning with a double and would score the very next at bat off an AJ Wright single.
From there, both teams would settle down on the mound through the middle innings with both sides going down in order.
Miami would once again retake the lead in the seventh with a run, but the Retrievers found an answer in the eighth thanks to a solo home run from Blaze O'Saben to tie it at 2-2.
However, Miami would strike last by scoring a run in the bottom of the inning, holding the Retrievers in the ninth to take the game 3-2.
AJ Wright led the way with two hits, one of five Retrievers to record a hit in the game. O'Saben had the big home run for his only hit of the contest.
The series finale will begin at 1 p.m. tomorrow on ACC Network Extra.
