UMBC Baseball Heads to Miami for a Weekend Set with the Hurricanes

Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC baseball will look to continue their strong start to the season, heading down to South Beach to take on Miami for a three game weekend series. The Retrievers are coming off a 2-1 series win against UNC Asheville last weekend that saw UMBC put up 29 runs on 31 hits in three games.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-The Retrievers are coming off a 2-1 weekend at UNC Asheville last weekend that saw the Retriever offense come alive, scoring 29 runs on 31 hits with two home runs. Junior Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) led the charge, coming just a single shy of the cycle in the finale.

-Freshman Ethan Wentzlaff (Damascus, Md./Damascus) leads the team after the first weekend batting .556, going 5-9 from the plate with a double and a home run and five RBI. Grad student Terrence Pinkston (La Plata, Md./McDonough/Norfolk State) is hitting .500 with a trio of RBI. In all, four different Retrievers have five hits and are batting over .400 on the year.

-On the mound, Nick Trabbachi (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Good Counsel/Appalachian State) lead the pitching staff after the first weekend. Trabbachi threw six shutout innings in the series finale with four strikeouts in the win. Schoch picked up his 11th career save in the series opener, tying the program record for career saves. He struck out six in three innings.

Scouting the Hurricanes:

-The Hurricanes are 6-2 on the year, coming off a tough 10-8 win against cross-town rival FIU on Wednesday. Miami is a perfect 4-0 at Alex Rodriguez Park this year, with their only two loses coming on the road at #4 Florida last weekend.

-Raymond Gil leads the Canes at the plate batting .458 with 11 hits in 24 at bats. Adrian Del Castillo leads the team with 13 hits and 11 RBI. Alex Toral provides the power in the lineup with 11 hits in 30 at bats (.367 avg.), scoring 10 times with six home runs.

-Miami has a trio of starters with a sub 3.00 ERA, led by Brian Van Belle who is 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA. Van Belle has given up two earned runs in 12.0 IP with seven strikeouts. Chris McMahon and Evan McKendry are also under 3.00 ERA at 2.31 and 2.77 respectively. McKendry leads the staff with 17 strikeouts.

All-Time Series:

-Miami and UMBC have met just two time prior to this weekend with the Canes leading the series 2-0. The last time the two sides met was in 2009 when Miami took an 11-1 decision. The time before that was in 1992 in the NCAA Regionals, when the Retrievers made the tournament as an at large team, falling 3-1.

All-Conference Honors:

-Junior Christian Torres and freshman Ethan Wentzlaff were named America East Player and Rookie of the Week for their efforts against UNC Asheville last weekend. Both Torres and Wentzlaff finished the weekend with five RBI, with Torres connecting on three extra base hits.

On Deck:

-UMBC will return to Maryland for a pair of midweek road games at Coppin State and Navy on Tuesday and Wednesday.
