Boston, Mass.-- UMBC baseball junior Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) and freshman Ethan Wentzlaff (Damascus, Md./Damascus) were named America East Player and Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday. Torres and Wentzlaff helped the Retrievers to a series win against UNC Asheville this past weekend to open the season, with both guys batting over .400 in the three game set.
Torres hit .417 in three games, going 5-12 from the plate with five runs scored and driving in five runs. He had three extra base hits with one double, one triple and one home run for 11 total bases and a slugging percentage of .917.
Wentzlaff was very impressive in his first three collegiate games. The Maryland native went 5-9 from the dish (.556 avg) with two runs scored and five RBI. He belted a home run and a double for a 1.000 slugging percentage with one steal.
The Retrievers are back on the diamond this weekend when they head south to take on Miami. The Hurricanes and Retrievers will play one game each day with Friday and Saturday starting at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. all on ACC Network Extra.
