UMBC Closes Regular Season Against Albany with #AEBASE Seeding on the Line

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball will host the Great Danes to close out the 2018 regular season this Friday and Saturday. The Retrievers (21-26, 11-10 AE) have clinched a playoff spot, and can finish anywhere from two through six in the conference standings. Albany (18-25, 8-13 AE) needs to win at least one game to have a shot at making the conference tournament. UMBC will honor eight seniors prior to the game on Saturday.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-UMBC comes into the final weekend of the regular season at 21-26, 11-10 AE after falling to Georgetown 11-6 on Tuesday. The Retrievers can finish anywhere from two through six in the upcoming America East Tournament. Last year, the Retrievers finished the regular season in second place, winning three straight games en route to their first America East title.

-Freshman Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) leads the team with a .359 batting average with 37 hits in 103 at bats. Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va.) leads the team with 49 hits and 29 RBI. AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) has scored 30 times with 44 hits, 22 of which (20 doubled and two home runs) come as extra base hits.

-Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Appalachian State) leads the pitching staff with a 1.79 ERA in 22 appearances with ten saves. He has struck out 63 in 50.1 innings of work. Max Goron (Laurel, Md./Reservoir), Matt Chanin (Olney, Md./Sherwood) and Chase Bailey (Fairfax, Va.) is the probable rotation for this weekend who are a collective 7-12 on the year.

Scouting the Great Danes:

-The Great Danes come into the final weekend at 18-25, 8-13 AE on the year, having lost their last six contests. Most recently, Albany was swept at the hands of Maine by a total of five runs over three games.

-Patrick Lagravinese leads the Great Danes in hits with 43 and batting average at .295. Connor Powers has driven in a team best 28 RBI, belting six home runs and ten doubles.

-Dominic Savino leads the Albany pitching staff with a 3.80 ERA and a 7-4 record in 71.0 innings pitched. He has struck out 62 batter with six complete games and one shutout, all team bests.

All-Time Series:

-The Retrievers and Great Danes have met 57 times in the all-time series with Albany leading 34-23. However, the Retrievers have gotten the better of the Great Danes in recent years, winning 13 of the last 20 meetings since 2014.

-Last year, the Retrievers won the regular season series 4-2, as well as knocking off the Great Danes in the America East Tournament to reach the title game. Matt Chanin threw a complete game shutout in the matchup to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team, as UMBC went on to win their first AE title.

#AEBASE Tournament Scenarios:

-Hartford, Stony Brook, UMass Lowell, UMBC and Maine all clinched a spot in the conference tournament last weekend. Albany and Binghamton are fighting for the last spot with the Great Danes just a game up on the Bearcats for the final spot.

-The Hawks can clinch the regular season title with just one win against Maine this weekend.

On Deck:

-The Retrievers will head to Orono, Maine looking to defend their America East crown at the America East Championships, May 23-26. The tournament will be played at Mahaney Diamond and will be hosted by Maine. UMBC will have to wait till the end of the weekend to find out who they will be playing in the tournament.
