Chanin Named #AEBASE Pitcher of the Week; UMBC Closes Out Non-Conference Play at Georgetown on Tuesday

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball senior pitcher Matt Chanin (Olney, Md./Sherwood) was named America East Pitcher of the Week by the conference on Tuesday. Chanin threw a complete game, three-hitter on Saturday in a 2-0 win for the Retrievers against Binghamton. The Retrievers travel to Georgetown tomorrow to close out non-conference play. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Shirley Povich Field.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-UMBC enters the midweek matchup with the Hoyas at 21-25, coming off a 2-1 series win against Binghamton this past weekend that all but secured them a spot in the upcoming America East Tournament. The Retrievers blanked the Bearcats 2-0 on Saturday before splitting the double header on Sunday.

-Freshman Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) leads the team at the plate with a .374 average with 37 hits in 99 at bats. Senior Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va.) leads the Retrievers with 49 hits, driving in a team best 29 RBI. AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) has 43 hits with 21 of them (19 doubles, two home runs) coming as extra base hits.

-Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Appalachian State) leads the pitching staff with a 1.79 ERA and a single season best 10 saves. He has thrown 50.1 innings of work with 63 strikeouts. Freshman Aaron Husson (Hawley, Pa.) has five wins on the year to lead the Retrievers in 15 appearances and three starts.

Scouting the Hoyas:

-The Hoyas enter the contest at 24-26 and are coming off a 2-1 series loss to BIG EAST foe Butler this past weekend. The Bulldogs took the first two games, before the Hoyas rallied for a 5-3 victory in the finale.

-Georgetown has a slew of players hitting over .300, led by Ryan P. Davis at .315. Ryan M. Davis has a team best 58 hits, while Eddie McCabe has driven in 35 runs and scored 26 times himself.

-Left hander Owen Lamon will start for Georgetown on Tuesday. Lamon will be making his 11th start of the year holding 4-3 record and 7.00 ERA. He has pitched 54.0 innings with 43 strikeouts.

All-Time Series:

-The Hoyas and Retrievers will be meeting for the second time this year and the 53rd time in the all-time series. Georgetown won the previous meeting 11-9 in Baltimore and leads the series 35-18. Last year, the Retrievers won the meeting in Bethesda by a 10-2 score.

Chanin Earns Conference Honors:

-Senior Matt Chanin was named America East Pitcher of the Week on Monday after his stellar performance against Binghamton on Saturday. Chanin threw a complete game, scattering three hits with five strikeouts in a 2-0 win.

On Deck: 

-UMBC will close out the regular season against Albany at Alumni Field this Friday and Saturday. The Retrievers can finish anywhere from second through sixth in the conference seeding.
