Wright, Retrievers Sweep Double Header with Stony Brook on Saturday

Stony Brook, N.Y.— AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) led the Retrievers with five hits and three RBI on Saturday as the Retrievers swept the double header with Stony Brook. UMBC came from behind in both wins to improve to 13-19, 6-5 AE on the year.

Game One:

Stony Brook came out and jumped on the Retrievers with a pair of runs in the first, taking an early 2-0 lead.

That would jump start the Retrievers, as they put up six runs the next half inning to take the lead. After Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa.) and Matt Campbell (Chesapeake, Va.) led off the inning with singles, AJ Wright drew walk to load the bases. Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va.) flew out to center to score Beeman. Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) singled home Campbell and was followed by a Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) single to plate Wright.

Freshman Dmitri Floyd (Dover, Del.) kept the rally going with his second double of the day to score Torres. Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) grounded out, scoring Goodwin with Zack DeThomasis (Rensselaer, N.Y.) adding the final blow with an RBI triple to make it 6-2.

Wright would strike again, doubling to left with one away in the fourth. He advanced on a Bright ground out and scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-2 Retrievers.

The junior increased the lead in the sixth, singling home DeThomasis who led off the inning with a single to give UMBC an 8-2 lead. Beeman would add the final blow, drilling a solo home run to right center in the eighth to give UMBC a 9-2 victory.

Mitchell Wilson (Hagerstown, Md./St. James) picked up his third win of the year going five innings of relief, giving up just two hits, needing just 63 pitches for the win.

Game Two:

Both teams could not get much going early on, as both starting pitchers were dealing early. The Seawolves, however, got on the board first with a run in the fourth to take an early lead.

However, it was the Retrievers once again who fought back. After Matt Campbell led off the inning with a walk, AJ Wright came to the plate and blasted a full count two-run home run to left to put UMBC in front. Goodwin added to the lead with an RBI single scoring Bright who doubled after the home run.

Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Appalachian State) picked up the win in 3.1 innings of relief, giving up two hits with one strikeout. Wright led the way with a pair of hits and two RBI.

UMBC and Stony Brook will close out the series tomorrow at noon.
