Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball took an early lead, but the visiting Hoyas rallied to defeat UMBC 11-9 on Tuesday night. Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va.) led the way with three hits, while Zack DeThomasis (Rensselaer, N.Y.) had three RBI.
UMBC drops their fourth straight to fall to 10-19 while Georgetown improves to 14-20.
Georgetown got things rolling with a pair of runs in the top of the first to take an early 2-0 lead.
The Retrievers responded in a big way, putting up seven runs in the bottom of the frame. Collin Stack (Jamestown, N.Y.) drew a two-out walk and was followed up by Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa.) who laced a single through the left side scoring Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) and Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel). DeThomasis added to the Retriever tally with a single to left center scoring Beeman and Stack. AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) capped the rally with a double down the left field line to plate Matt Campbell (Chesapeake, Va.) and DeThomasis in his second at bat in the inning.
Both sides settled down in the middle innings before the Hoyas plated a pair in the fifth to cut the deficit to 7-4. UMBC increased their lead back to four on a DeThomasis sacrifice bunt scoring Stack.
However, Georgetown would score the next six runs to take a 10-8 lead in the eighth. The Retrievers would not go quietly, chipping the Hoya lead to one on a Goodwin RBI single that knocked in Bright.
But that would be the last run the Retrievers scored, as Georgetown added another in the ninth to take an 11-9 victory on Tuesday.
DeThomasis led the way with three RBI on two hits. Bright had three hits on the evening with Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.), Goodwin, Beeman and DeThomasis adding two each.
UMBC will have a short turnaround, hosting Coppin State tomorrow, April 18 at 6 p.m.
