UMass Lowell got things started with a back-to-back home runs in the first off starter Max Goron to take an early 3-0 lead.
Goron would settle down from there, holding the River Hawks without a hit the rest of the time he was in. UMBC would threaten in the second, loading the bases, but were unable to cash in. They would break through in the fourth with Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) leading off with a hit by pitch. He would move up on a wild pitch and score after Collin Stack (Jamestown, N.Y.) reached on an error. Dalton Stewart got the lone hit with a no out single in the inning.
However, that would be all the Retrievers could muster as the River Hawk pitching staff held the Retriever bats quiet the rest of the way in a 3-1 loss for UMBC.
Stewart had the lone hit for UMBC, going 1-3 from the plate. Goron went seven strong innings giving up just three hits and three runs with two strikeouts.
The River Hawks and Retrievers close out the series tomorrow with a double header starting at 11 a.m.
