Hofstra Uses Strong Start to Defeat UMBC, 9-6 on Saturday

Baltimore, Md.—The Pride opened the game with six runs in the first two innings to take control on Saturday. UMBC countered back with six runs in the fifth to cut the lead to just three, but could not muster any more runs, falling 9-6 on Saturday.

UMBC falls to 2-8 on the year while Hofstra improves to 7-2 after defeating Mount St. Mary's 11-0 earlier in the day.

The Pride got the scoring started in top of the first, with a two-run home from Vito Friscia to give Hofstra a 2-0 lead. Hofstra would continue to add to their lead in the second with four runs and another three in the fourth to take a 9-0 lead into the fifth.

UMBC would come to life in the fifth, putting six runs up to cut the deficit to just three. Christian Torres (Miami, Fla./Miami Senior) doubled home Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) and Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) to get the scoring started. Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) followed up with a single to second, scoring Zack DeThomasis (Rensselaer, N.Y./Hudson Valley CC). Collin Stack (Jamestown, N.Y./Monroe CC) capped the scoring run with a three-run home run to left center, plating Carroll and Torres.

However, the Pride bullpen would keep the Retrievers off the base paths the rest of the way, holding on for a 9-6 victory on Saturday.

Stack led the Retrievers with a pair of hits and three RBI. Torres brought in a pair on his lone hit of the day.

UMBC and Hofstra will conclude the UMBC Baseball Tournament tomorrow, Sunday March 11 at noon.
